The original Making Waves followed Lakey through the highs, setbacks, and pressure of life on the Championship Tour. But along the way, there was another story being captured, one that was simply about the surfing.
Filmed by Morgan Maassen, Making Waves: Strictly Surf pulls together some of the best waves from the project, including plenty that never made the original cut. From familiar California lineups at Lowers and Rincon to the long walls of Jeffreys Bay, it’s a look at Lakey’s surfing outside the everyday rhythm of competition.

Chasing Waves, Not Results
The goal was simple: go somewhere with great waves and give Lakey the space to surf without a heat clock, scores, or a jersey.
That took the crew from Southern California to South Africa, the furthest trip of the project and a chance for Lakey to experience J-Bay completely differently.
She had competed there before. She had never been there like this.
One morning in particular made the entire trip worth it. Lakey woke up, looked out the window, and saw J-Bay absolutely pumping.
No contest. No heat to prepare for. Just one of the best waves in the world doing exactly what they came all that way hoping it would do.
It became a session Lakey won’t forget.
A Different Side of Lakey
There are plenty of places to watch Lakey Peterson compete. Making Waves: Strictly Surf is about everything that happens when she doesn’t have to.
The speed, style and approach are still there, but without the structure of competition surrounding them. This edit is a more stripped-back look at her surfing across Lowers, Rincon and J-Bay, built from a collection of sessions captured throughout the making of the original film.
